Wolf mating season runs from mid January to early March in Yellowstone. While many animals are having the hardest time of their year right now amid the cold and snow and lack of food, wolves are at their peak. Denning season is just around the corner, and wolves are busy laying the groundwork for the next generation. Typically only the alpha pair mates in a wolf pack, however food abundance in Yellowstone allows other adults to breed as well. While the alpha pair is prioritized, adult females will sneak away to meet with males from other packs, and then often return to raise pups with their home pack. In this video, George talks about how non-alpha wolves get a date – without getting killed by rival packs.
