With over 4,500 bison in Yellowstone, I have ample opportunity to study them throughout the seasons. I never tire of watching them in order to create bison sculptures that reflect their subtle movements and behaviors. The relationship between birds and bison is an interesting one. The bison act as mobile perches from which the birds feed on insects the herbivores flush out the grass. With bison living into their late teens and early 20’s, I have to wonder if some of those birds have come to know individual bison. I portrayed the bison shedding off her winter coat – a true hallmark of spring, juxtaposed against the musical note-like arrangement of the birds on her back.
