It's time for a sculpture update to show you the new pieces I've been working on. I hope you enjoy the new work coming from the studio!
I'm pleased to say that I'm now nearing the completion of my first book on animal language (with Greystone Books), and will soon have more time to dedicate to being in the Park, sculpting from life, and working on new pieces. YAY!
Inspiration for art can change and vacillate as much as the weather. There are times where things jump out and demand to be explored at greater depths, take for instance this year, watching beautiful young bison calves making the scene was just too irresistible. Having been through a stretch of time where work on the book had me indoors, rather than out and about, this was a great excuse to be out in the sunshine and in the company of these amazing animals--our national mammal.
Sculpting a mother bison and calf.
Most sculptures begin as an amorphous lump of clay, but over time they evolve not only correct anatomy and a suggestion of behavior, but a spirit, an inner life and landscape that echoes much of my own.
This sculpture of a mother and calf bison has been in process for several weeks now and I want to offer an opportunity to add this piece to your collection before it hits the broader market. There will be a price break for those who take advantage of this opportunity based on the model in progress (a 15% pre-cast discount, plus free shipping, with a $500 deposit). As the saying goes, ‘if you like the clay, you will absolutely love the bronze’. The sculpture measures 15"L x 8"W x 7.5"H, and will be a limited edition of 22. Estimated retail is $3000.
Meeting and sculpting "Grizz"...
Adventuring beyond our home ground last week, Jenny, young George, and I joined fellow artists from the Oh Be Joyful Gallery in Crested Butte on a horse packing trip high in the mountains of Colorado. It was a first for us, and an incredible trip. While I SWORE I wouldn't sculpt a horse (to avoid the cliche that every sculptor on a pack trip sculpts the pack horses), the horses (and one in particular named Grizz, demanded it. You can read the full post about sculpting this horse, including a video of Grizz demanding my attention while trying to sculpt him, here.
I enjoyed this study so much that I am planning to cast it. Existing collectors can reserve a piece before it's released to the public through the Oh Be Joyful Gallery. Estimated retail $600, edition of 22, 5.5"L x 1.5"W x 3 7/8" H. If you're interested in this piece you can contact me directly or Oh Be Joyful Gallery.
Kingfisher: A Favorite River Resident
For the anglers and bird lovers out there, a new piece in the works is a favorite river resident--a belted kingfisher--with a successful catch. This is a scale model, the final finished piece will be life size. I've already gotten a bunch of interest in this piece; let me know if you would like to reserve one of the castings in the edition (there will be 22). Estimated retail $2500. For this piece I am also offering a 15% pre-cast discount, plus free shipping, with a $500 deposit. Approximate dimensions: 12"L. 5.5"W x 18.5"H.
Prices listed above are approximate, pending final foundry cost.
I’ll put the final touches on these three pieces by the end of the summer 2023. It will take about twelve weeks of foundry time to completion. I am planning to have all three cast and ready to ship by early December (just in time for the holidays….).
To pre-order, or if you'd like to see more images, just let me know!
Finally, I have restocked a number of smaller and mid-sized pieces, and am happy to extend free shipping on any in-stock sculptures through July 24, 2023, which means you can have a new addition to your collection within a week or two! Browse and purchase in-stock sculptures online HERE.
Thank you for bringing my work and the spirit of the wild into your home. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
