Magnificent, two thousand pound bulls strut across the landscape, bellowing their virility in deep-throated guttural roars as they compete with other bulls for females coming into estrus. Plumes of dust rise high into the air, as the mighty bulls rumble, bellow, wallow, and fight. Calves follow forlornly behind their mothers, ready to scurry out of the way when a bull approaches. Thousands of bison are gathered for the rut here in Yellowstone National Park. It’s a humbling and awe-inspiring scene, one we never tire of watching, sketching, or sculpting.
